My approach.
As an artist myself, I understand firsthand the anxiety that handing your art to an engineer can bring. For many artists, especially those who self-produce or who have worked with a smaller team for the majority of their career, there can be no easy way of psychologically ‘letting go’ when it comes time for the music to have a second, third, or fourth pair of ears helping to bring a much-needed fresh perspective to the finishing process. It can be daunting to imagine that those microscopic production tweaks you’ve made over days, weeks, or months could so easily be handled without proper care by a third party, who may not fully understand the original vision.
Translation is everything. The goal at mixing stage is not to reinvent - it is to fully understand and respect the intentions in the production, and bring it to a place where it can translate optimally across the widest possible span of systems and devices. I believe it is as much the engineer’s job to respect the artist’s vision, as it is to do what is technically ‘correct’. We must work together to do whatever it takes to bring the music to life.
